What are removable retainers?

Retainers are appliances designed to keep your new smile in place. They look like a removable brace or a clear aligner. After you have your braces removed or complete your Invisalign treatment here at Cowbridge Dental Specialists, a retainer is really important as it prevents unwanted movement of your teeth, making sure you don’t lose the benefits of your orthodontic treatment.

Your dental retainer options

Retainers come in two main modes, fixed and removable.

  • A fixed retainer is a thin wire attached to the back surface of your teeth. This is permanently fixed and should be monitored regularly by your orthodontist. At Cowbridge Dental Specialists we recommend that fixed retainers should be used alongside a removable retainer.
  • Removable retainers are like thin mouthguards and sit over your teeth. Because they are removable they are easy to clean. To begin with, you’ll need to wear these day and night, but after your teeth have had time to settle, you’ll just wear them at night.

What is the retention phase of orthodontic treatment?

The retention phase is focused on ensuring your teeth stabilise in their new positions and adjust to their new alignment. After your braces or aligners have been removed, one of our specialists will design and fit retainers made just for you.

It is recommended that you wear your retainers throughout your lifetime. This is because our teeth naturally change position over time and a retainer can prevent this from occurring.
